Grant Aims
to Reduce the Use of Antipsychotic Medications
in NWO Nursing Facilities
Perrysburg, OH - Nearly
50% of Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) in
Northwest Ohio are over using antipsychotic
medications to manage difficult behaviors from
their residents. This is a problem.
Almost half of NWO SNF
communities give medications to 20-80% of their
residents with dementia. This is well above the
national average of 18%.
It’s time to do something
about it.
Diana Waugh, owner of Waugh
Consulting, LLC, and Barbara Brock, owner of
Communication Art, Inc., were awarded a grant
from the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) and
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
to fund a three-year program to reduce the use
of antipsychotic medications in NWO’s SNFs.
This exciting program is
tailored for skilled nursing communities.
Starting on January 3rd,
health care professionals from SNFs in NWO can
register for the free educational opportunity
that includes:

at the Hilton Garden Inn in
Perrysburg, OH in March 2017
- Free Reality Comprehension
Clock Test (RCCT) Certification
for Three Consecutive Years
- Training and Educational

- Follow-Up Support to Monitor

Waugh and Brock’s goal is to
eliminate the use of antipsychotic medications
by implementing non-pharmacological tools and
approaches to caring for residents in these
communities.

help teams reduce difficult behaviors from
residents while also reducing the stress level
the communities’ staff members.

About Diana Waugh of Waugh
Consulting, LLC
Diana, RN, BSN, CDP-Certified
Dementia Practitioner, applies her out of the
box approach to the care of individuals
suffering from memory loss. Over the last 25,
years she has worked to eliminate physical,
psychological and chemical restraint use in care
facilities. Her key to success has been through
focusing on the social needs of the person.
As a national speaker, a
consultant, a researcher and a writer she
strives to share simple, practical techniques
that can make both family member caregivers and
professionals, experts in memory care.
As a Certified Dementia
Practitioner, her goal is to "open the gates” of
the learners’ minds to different approaches for
everyday challenges facing family member
caregivers and professionals when dealing with
individuals suffering from memory loss.

About Barbara Brock of
Communication Art, Inc.
Barbara Brock is a seasoned
state and national healthcare speaker. As an
artist, she owned and operated a children’s art
studio for 17 years. Her interest turned to the
elderly when she realized the relationship
between the process by while children learn and
the manner in which elderly people with memory
loss seemed to forget.
As a researcher, Barbara has
dedicated a large portion of her career to the
development and standardization of dementia
tools. She served as the lead investigator for
research projects on three occasions. She is the
original creator of the Reality Comprehension
Clock Test (RRCT) and social model for dementia
known as Dementia Population Gift of Purpose
brain exercise curriculum. She is also the
co-author of numerous healthcare instructional
textbooks and the founder of Communication Art,
Inc.
